The Thessaloniki metro will be handed over to citizens in 87 days, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced. It will serve 254,000 passengers daily.
On Thursday, 05.09.2024, Hellenic Metro SA released photographs of the interiors of 12 of the 13 Thessaloniki Metro stations, serving 18,000 passengers per hour. 12 stations ready for operation on the main linehowever, only the Venizelos station is missing, where there were problems with the movement of the objects found at the construction site archaeological sitesbut some maintenance work is still ongoing.
During the press conference, the following were presented in detail: technical details of the projectand also numerous advantageswhich the operation of the metro will bring to the city of Thessaloniki.
The expected daily passenger flow will be 254,000 passengers on the main line and 87,000 on the Kalamaria extension.
Main Thessaloniki metro line is 9.6 km long, has 13 modern stations and a depot, and occupies a total area of 22.5 hectares. The metro line starts from the center of Thessaloniki and the new railway station and, following the streets of Monastiriou, Egnatia and Delphi, ends in the area of Nea Elvetia, where it will connect with the station of Pylaia.
There will be daily 18 automated driverless trains will operate at an average speed of 30 km/h and cover the distance in 17 minutes, serving 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction and a total of 254,000 per day. The wait for a train at a station will initially be 2.5 minutesand after receiving an additional 15 trains this time will be reduced to 90 seconds.
