Olympus cleanup: 20 tons of solid household waste removed

The environmental project to clean up the territory of the Olympus National Park is carried out by the department of the OFYPEKA (Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency).

As stated in the relevant message of the Administration, for several decades Mount Olympus has been a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors. And within the framework of providing the services they need, the construction and placement of wooden, metal or iron infrastructure has been implemented in many parts of the national park. This infrastructure includes: protective railings, steps/stairs/platforms (in places of strong slopes), information signs and structures for easy rest (e.g. gazebos, benches, etc.).

During the implementation of the campaign obsolete and unusable infrastructure facilities were dismantled and a total of about 20 tons of solid waste (wood, concrete, iron and metal) was collectedas well as other household waste, which was taken away by trucks from the National Park for final disposal. At the same time, special attention was paid to the decontamination and improvement of important places and areas of the Park, such as “Gortia” and the area around the (old) monastery of Ιεράς Μονής Αγίου Διονυσίου του En Ολύμπω.

“The old infrastructure that existed in the area for many years has been dismantled, as well as the mule sheds that contained various waste such as abandoned animal mangers, mattresses and saddles that were in a state of chronic decomposition,” explains the head of the Olympus Management Unit, Triantaphyllos Bythos, specifying that “live force” – mules – was used to transport various materials to the mountain.

The project is funded from OFYPEKA's regular budget and work is expected to continue until the end of next month (September), with new benches and a kiosk to be installed in the following months.
