Athens now seems expensive even to tourists coming from abroad, from countries where incomes are much higher.
Good traditional food is out of reach: even in the historic city centre, pork gyros (souvlaki, kebabs) can cost 21 euros, and moussaka 19 euros per serving.
“People are very friendly, it's a nice place to be. It's hot and a bit expensive, but we don't mind,” some tourists tell reporters from the Greek publication. However, there are also unpleasant surprises, such as the particularly high prices for traditional Greek dishes. “The food is good, but we look at the menu, which is usually displayed at the door. Where we go, everything is quite economical. We don't choose very expensive places,” others say.
A tourist will have to pay 21 euros for a portion of gyro pork and 19 euros for a portion of moussaka, two of the most typical Greek dishes, in a restaurant with a view of the Acropolis. In general, having lunch:
- Country salad: 14 euros
- Portion of pork gyro: 21 euros X 2 = 42 euros
- Greek beer: 7 euros X 2 = 14 euros.
Total: 70 euros.
