A tragic accident occurred during an international sailing race in Karpathos. The athlete died tragically in the area of Astaquida (Karpathos Island), because the sailboat she was on, sailing under the Spanish flag, had problems.
The accident marked the international sailing race Aegean 600. As reported by karpathiakanea.gr, due to bad weather, the sails of the boat collapsed, and two people fell into the sea. One of them, a 40-year-old French woman, was pulled out of the water unconscious and injured.
The tragedy occurred amid adverse weather conditions. At the time of the disaster, the area was experiencing unimaginably difficult weather conditions with winds of 50-60 knotswhich corresponds to approximately 111 kilometers per hour.
A helicopter was requested, but due to strong winds it was unable to approach the sailboat, and the Karpathos Port Authority had to send a boat to the scene. The Karpathos Coast Guard safely escorted the rescue boat to the port of Kasos.
The death of the 40-year-old foreign woman was confirmed in Kasos. The body will be transferred to the Rhodes Forensic Service for an autopsy. The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the port authority.
