Ukrainian authorities are recruiting prisoners to serve in the Armed Forces. The Ministry of Justice believes that there could be 10-20 thousand volunteers.
There are parallels with the Russian approach, Kyiv admits. However, the Ukrainian authorities emphasize that writes Euronews that the Ukrainian prisoners will undergo the most thorough medical selection and receive the same training as the other volunteers.
At the same time, in accordance with Ukrainian legislation, it is prohibited to accept prisoners serving sentences for serious crimes into military service. Former prisoners will serve in special units, and the consent of the unit commander is required for this.
Our previous publication toldthat certain categories of prisoners who have committed minor or moderate offenses will be able to receive parole (by court order) and voluntarily mobilize – such a law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on May 8. This right will be granted only to those prisoners who have no more than three years left to serve their sentence.
