A predatory fish has once again been spotted in the sea off the coast of Crete, causing problems for both fishermen and swimmers.
This type of fish not only terrifies swimmers, but also poses serious problems for fishing. In a new video filmed on a Cretan beach, we see a flock of rabbit fish (λαγοκέφαλος)who cannot be frightened by stones thrown into the sea or by the noise made by swimmers. Unfortunately, there are more and more fish, and they do not seem to be afraid of human presence.
Moreover, in recent years there has been an alarming Rabbit fish attacks on swimmers have become more frequent. The President of the Professional Association of Fishermen of the Prefecture of Heraklion, Yiannis Androulakis, emphasizes that these incidents are indeed not isolated. “There are too many rabbitfish accidents. And what we have already told the authorities of the Crete region is to inform the public about this, because this species of marine life is aggressive. Fish can appear even in shallow water,” he said.
One of the most shocking incidents occurred in Sitia, where a child was attacked by a predatory fish and had to undergo surgery. Unfortunately these incidents are not limited to Crete as they have also been reported in other areas such as Kalymnos.
In total, 6-8 accidents are known. “I believe there are many more, but they are not disclosed so as not to harm tourism,” noted Mr. Androulakis.
