Eurostat: noticeable reduction in inflation in Greece to 2.3%. In the eurozone it rose to 2.6%


Eurozone-adjusted inflation fell significantly in Greece in May, down almost 1 percentage point from the corresponding month in 2023, falling to 2.3% from 3.2% in April, according to preliminary data from the EU's official statistical office, Eurostat.

On a monthly basis, compared to April 2024, consumer prices were expected to follow a “negative trend” of -0.3%, down from 1% last month. At the eurozone level, inflation followed the opposite path year-on-year in May, accelerating to 2.6% from 2.4% in April.

In particular, in May, on an annualized basis, they grew by 4.1% from 3.7% in April, and on a monthly basis – by 0.6%, which is the maximum figure compared to other major groups. This is followed by food, alcohol and tobacco (an increase of 2.6% compared to 2.8% in April), non-energy industries (+0.8% from 0.9% a month earlier) and energy (+0.3 %) from -0.6% in April (the only indicator in the main category in which prices did not decrease).

Countries with the highest and lowest inflation: Belgium, as in April, is the country with the highest inflation, as it remained at 4.9% in May, followed by Croatia with 4.3%, and then the two countries of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal and Spain with 3.9 % and 3.8% respectively. At the same time, consumer prices showed the smallest increase in Latvia, Finland and Lithuania (0.2%, 0.5% and 0.8%, respectively).
