The statement of Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece, about the task of overthrowing the government in Russia was called thoughtless and dangerous not only for the Greek people, but also for EU.
This was stated by Yorgos Katrugalos, a member of the opposition SYRIZA and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece. According to the press service of the party, Varvitsiotis’ statements made to The Hill (USA) are “dangerous for Greece and harmful for the European Union.” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says Western sanctions are not aimed at changing Russian power, while a Greek diplomat stressed that they are aimed at fueling unrest, writes GreekReporter. Katrugalos notes:
“The current Greek government is becoming the only Western government that clearly states that sanctions against Russia are aimed at overthrowing the President of the Russian Federation.”
He notes that the Greek government is not just opposed to Russia. It claims that the port of Alexandroupolis, which has been made available to the US military, is at the forefront of events. The politician claims that the current government “is becoming more and more dangerous not only for the interests of the Greek people and the country’s international position, but also for the position of the European Union and diplomatic efforts to establish peace in Ukraine.”
In this regard, it is worth recalling that the opposition party SYRIZA, like New Democracy, sharply condemned Russia’s military special operation. The Greek government sent a plane with weapons to Ukraine. And the increase in the US military presence in Greece in 2021 was a continuation of negotiations initiated by Alexis Tsipras, the leader of SYRIZA, during his premiership.
