Problem that worries 7 out of 10 Greeks

The high cost of living is a major concern for many people, especially those over the age of 40, as it directly affects their decisions.

In the European elections last June, two main factors influenced the decisions of Greeks and other European citizens: rising prices and the general economic situation.

In Greece and Cyprus, the percentage of citizens for whom the cost of living and financial situation was a priority was significantly higher than the European average: 70% and 69% respectively, compared to 42% and 41% on the European average.

Among the countries EUApart from Greece and Cyprus, the high percentage of citizen participation in European elections was due to rising prices and the cost of living: in Portugal – 59%, Ireland – 56%, Hungary and Bulgaria – 56% and France – 52%. In contrast, in Denmark the figure is 11%, Finland – 17%, the Netherlands – 16% and Sweden – 5%.

According to the Eurobarometer survey in Greece, the conditions that inflation has created for citizens are critical to their decisions and actionsand elections are no exception. In our country, rising prices and the cost of living seem to be had the greatest influence on participation in the European elections citizens aged 40 to 54 years – 73%. Among those over 55, seven out of ten went to the polls. Other important factors:

• A third of European voters (34%) say the international situation motivated them to vote. The same percentage cite defense of democracy and the rule of law as their motivation (32%).
• In contrast, in Greece, social protection, welfare and access to health care are the third most important issue (40%), affecting four in ten citizens over 25 years of age.
• According to the data, unemployment is also an important issue for Greeks, especially among young people, as it affects more than one in four young people aged 15 to 34 years: 34% (15-24 years old) and 24% (25-34 years old).

According to the Eurobarometer survey, there are four main reasons why citizens believe their country's participation in the EU is beneficial:

• Increased cooperation between Member States (36%).
• Protecting peace and strengthening security (32%).
• EU contribution to economic growth (28%).
• Creation of new jobs (24%).

In Greece protecting peace and strengthening security ranks first (45%), followed by improving cooperation between Greece and other EU countries (36%) in second place, followed by increasing the voice of the Greek people in the world (31%) and improving cooperation between Greece and countries , non-EU (24%).
