Habit "jump out" from a vehicle may result in a fine

Mistakes made by drivers in Greece when getting out of the car can lead to serious consequences.

In our country this phenomenon is becoming more and more common. Most accidents occur due to traffic violations such as speeding and running red lights. However, even seemingly insignificant actions can cause dangerous situations on the road. One of these is carelessly opening the door when exiting the car.

Many drivers, having stopped the car and turned off the engine, rush to leave it without even looking to see whether other vehicles are following the car – cars, motorcycles or bicycles. This creates a risk of being hit by a passing car, or creating a dangerous situation for a cyclist or motorcyclist.

According to Article 30 of the Traffic Regulations (ΚΟΚ, “Άνοιγμα των θυρών οχημάτων”), such behavior is punishable by fine of 40 euros. The article states that “It is prohibited to open or leave the doors of a vehicle open, or to enter or exit a vehicle without first ensuring that the actions do not pose a danger to other road users.

Considering the possible tragic consequences, Car manufacturers are actively developing systems to prevent doors from opening when another vehicle is nearby..

One such system is “Safe Exit” (“Ασφαλούς Εξόδου”, Safe Exit)), which uses radar to detect approaching vehicles and sounds an audible signal in case of danger. In some models this system actually blocks the door, preventing an accident. In many cases, the system is activated regardless of whether the engine is running or not. Safe Exit provides protection for all passengers, especially children.
