Greece: tightening criminal liability for minors and their parents (video)

The Greek Cabinet of Ministers, which met yesterday, September 30, decided on measures to toughen penalties for violence between minors. In addition to changing the punishment for parents, a number of new correctional measures will be adopted for teenagers 12-15 years old – you can end up behind bars at 15 years old.

The reasons leading to the increase in incidents among minors, including in schools, became one of the main issues at yesterday's Cabinet meeting chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis and Minister of Justice Georgios Floridis presented legislative initiatives to combat crime cases.

The Cabinet of Ministers decided to toughen the punishment, for a period of at least one year, for an offense related to the lack of sufficient parental supervision. In addition, corrective measures will be taken for teenagers aged 12-15 who have committed offenses. Possession of a weapon, for example, carrying a knife, by minors will be punishable under a separate article, writes CNN Greece.

Following a comprehensive study of Greek police data on juvenile crime trends, the following legislative initiatives are proposed:

  1. mandatory replacement of a restrictive measure with pre-trial detention in case of repeated commission of a crime in relation to specific offenses,
  2. the abolition of the complete release of the perpetrator from liability if he has fully satisfied the victim in the case of theft or robbery, and simply providing the appropriate mitigation of consequences,
  3. toughening criminal penalties for parents who neglect to supervise their minor children,
  4. a more precise distinction between the concept of “knife” as a common one and a special one related to “melee weapons”,
  5. introducing restrictions on the sale and availability of knives to minors,
  6. differentiation of criminal liability for general and special purpose knives,
  7. tightening the minimum penalty for possession of weapons, especially firearms, ammunition, etc.,
  8. the punishment for the use of weapons will be served as a cumulative sentence, and will not be subject to the provisions on aggravated punishments,
  9. raising the category of criminal offense for carrying a firearm,
  10. prohibits persons who have been convicted or are facing criminal charges from obtaining a firearms license for certain acts.
