Owner of 500 liters of olive oil of dubious authenticity detained

A man was arrested in the Pieria region for having 500 liters of oil of dubious origin and authenticity in his possession.

According to police, the man was arrested by officers from the Pieria Immigration Department because he was driving the car in which the suspicious “find” was found.

During the inspection, police officers found 100 containers of 5 liters each, labeled “Extra Virgin Olive Oil,” in the vehicle. The cans contained olive oil, but since its origin and authenticity were questionable (there were no accompanying documents for the cargo), everything was confiscated. An investigation is underway.

Let us remind you, Olive oil prices in Greece have risen significantly in recent years. In 2022, the price per liter of extra virgin olive oil was around 5.45-5.75 euros, and by August 2023 it had risen to 9.50-12 euros per liter. Overall, the retail price of olive oil in Greece has increased by 51% over the past two years. As a result, violations related to the production, delivery and sale of “green gold” have begun to be identified.

According to experts, the rise in prices is due to a shortage of olive oil reserves in Europe and domestic inflation.
