Two arrested for brutal attack on French tourist in Crete (video)

Two young men arrested in Rethymno, Crete for attacking a 36-year-old French tourist. The victim received severe head and facial injuries.

The two arrested belonged to a group of four young men who attacked a Frenchman outside a bar in Rethymno in the early hours of Monday, September 2, 2024.

The single-mandate court of Rethymno upgraded the charges from a misdemeanor to a felony, leading to the arrest of two suspects on Wednesday. Two other youths from the group were detained and released, but will still appear before the mixed assize court. The date of the trial will be set by the appellate prosecutor of Crete.

A court date will be set by the Cretan appellate prosecutor. The two released suspects said through their lawyer that their participation was solely to prevent an incident. All four defendants also presented video evidence showing that the French tourist and his group were involved in an altercation, with one of them allegedly holding a glass bottle.

The fight began when a group of French men came out of the bar, holding a bottle of alcohol, according to one of the staff. One of them appeared to push a Cretan man, after which one of the group grabbed the bottle and began hitting the guy with it, while another of the group of four Cretans kicked him in the ribs and punched him.

On Thursday morning, the victim was hospitalized with a fractured skull, but, as reported, his life is out of danger.

This is the second brutal attack on tourists this summer in Crete after Greek-Canadian businessman was brutally beaten by local men outside the bar where he was staying with his family.
