Russian Interior Ministry: 400 Foreigners from “Unfriendly Countries” Made Their Choice


More than four hundred citizens of “unfriendly countries” have received asylum in Russia, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

The agency reports “active work” to provide assistance to foreigners who have made “their choice in favor of the spiritual and cultural values ​​of Russia” and have sought “protection on the territory of the Russian Federation.”

Most of them are citizens of Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Canada. The ministry does not specify the period during which the 400 people were accepted. Russia began maintaining a list of “unfriendly countries” in the spring of 2021, when it included only the United States and the Czech Republic. After the introduction of troops into Ukraine, the list expanded to about 50 countries.

At the end of 2023, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that over nine months, more than 110 German citizens and 84 citizens of the Baltic states had applied for asylum.
