Clashes between protesters and MAT resulted in 33 arrests

As a result of clashes between protesters and police in Syntagma Square, 33 people were detained, Greek police report.

A small group of 250 people calling themselves “National Constituent Assembly – Direct Democracy”gathered in the main square of Athens on Sunday, despite the police ban to hold gatherings that day. Some demonstrators threw objects at police, who pushed them back using tear gas, state broadcaster ERT reported.

Another protest, organised by a group of army reservists, was planned for two hours later but did not take place…

The police officers from the MAT squad acted extremely harshly. The author of the video commented on the situation:

“Individuals who identify themselves as “The Constituent National Assembly is a direct democracy” despite the ban ELAheld their planned rally. The police initially allowed a small gathering of the far right in front of the parliament, but a conflict broke out and an order was given to withdraw to the Fillelineon side, i.e. to the lower side of the square. Clashes broke out, objects were thrown at the police. In response, stun grenades, tear gas were used and arrests were made.”

Let us recall that the director of the Athens police made a decision prohibit “holding a public meeting in the open air on September 1 at 12:00 at Sunday Syntagma by members of the movement “The Constituent National Assembly is a direct democracy” and holding a meeting on the same day at 10:30 am by members “Armed Forces Reservist Communities”“.

As he explains EL.AS in his statement, “This ban was imposed, on the one hand, because the organizers did not notify the local police department of their intention to invite the general public to participate, and on the other hand, because the event poses a serious risk to public safety and threatens serious disruption to the socio-economic life of the area, automobile and pedestrian traffic, the operation of infrastructure and public facilities at the venue.”
