Dutch tourist missing on Samos island found dead

A 65-year-old Dutch tourist who went missing on the eastern Aegean island of Samos was found dead on Wednesday morning.

Bridget van Gennip was on holiday on an island in the eastern Aegean Sea when she went missing on the morning of August 22. She called a friend and told her of her plans for Thursday. When the woman did not respond on Friday morning, the friend reported her missing to the police and said that Bridget had been missing since 10:30 a.m. and that she had been walking towards the Eupalinio Depression.

Malu Miedema, Bridget's daughter, wrote in her post: “My mother has been missing since yesterday in Samos. Her name is Bridget and she disappeared in the area of ​​the Pythagorean and Eupalinian tunnels. “I understand that many people have already mobilized to search for her, which is very good in these tense times, especially since I am in Holland and trying to organize everything I can from here. Any contribution to the search for my mother would be greatly appreciated. She went missing yesterday while walking and lost her phone along the way…”.

The search was carried out by local and Dutch search teams, including eight dogs brought from the Netherlands.

According to local media, authorities initially ruled out the “crime” theory, suggesting that the woman slipped, fell from a height and died. An autopsy is expected to establish the exact cause of her death.

She became the second Dutch tourist to lose her life during the trek to Samos in the summer of 2024, and the seventh to die. One US citizen and two French women remain missing in action on the islands of Amorgos and Sikinos respectively.
