Oceanographic expert Jean-Pierre Gattuso warns that the warming of the Mediterranean Sea is causing extreme consequences on land:
“When the clouds lift, we get what we call Mediterranean episodes. In other words, the air suddenly cools and can no longer hold all that moisture. Suddenly we get extremely intense rainfall that causes massive damage!”
And these are far from all the possible ones consequences of sea water warming. Marine biologists warn that rising surface temperatures are affecting what lies below and could have devastating consequences for the environmentMarine biologist Julien Lopez-Pardo explains:
“There is a loss of biodiversity, a loss of environmental quality. The environment will have a greater tendency to retreat.”
Experts predict, writes Euronews, what Rising Mediterranean water temperatures will harm marine life and cause changes on land. And it's already happening. The UN Environment Programme warns that if the Mediterranean region gets any hotter, 510 million people will be at risk.

Since the 1980s, Mediterranean ecosystems have been undergoing radical changes, with a decline in biodiversity and the emergence of invasive alien species. These include the tropical rabbitfish, which devours the algae and sea grasses on the Mediterranean seabed, depriving other marine species of valuable resources. Under a scenario of global warming of more than +1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, more than 20% of fish and shellfish could disappear in the eastern Mediterranean by 2060, and fisheries revenues could decline by 30% by 2050, scientists warn.
