Greek-flagged tanker Sounion attacked in Red Sea off Yemen

The Greek-flagged tanker Sounion was attacked by two small Houthi boats and hit by three projectiles in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen on Wednesday, the UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO) said.

There were no injuries among the 25 crew on board, but the vessel lost its ability to manoeuvre, UKMTO added. The tanker was carrying petroleum products and all 25 crew members were foreign nationals.

The ship said it was approached by two small vessels with about 15 people on board and there was a brief exchange of small arms fire, UKMTO said. The exchange of fire occurred 77 nautical miles (142 km) west of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

British security firm Ambrey separately reported an incident in the same area, but gave no further details. Delta Tankers, the company operating the tanker, was unavailable for comment, according to Reuters.
