State energy company Electricite Du Liban said it had run out of gas oil, leaving Lebanon in darkness.
“Total power outage” reports Bloomberg, came as shelling between Hezbollah and Israel intensified. Lebanon's Liban said the last unit of its Zahran power plant had been “forced offline.”
Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported on Saturday, August 17, that the power outage would affect a variety of infrastructure facilities, including airports, prisons, ports, the sewage system and others.
EDL said that once the fuel was delivered, the power plant units would resume operation and electricity would gradually be restored to previous levels. Walid Fayad, Lebanon's acting energy minister, promised that the lights would return within 24 to 48 hours.
