MyCoast: 12,500 inspections since the beginning of summer – 7 regions with the largest number of complaints


Complaints from citizens about beaches and coastlines across Greece have led to large-scale inspections.

Over the past week, 2,500 inspections have been carried out. In total, over 1,600 beach businesses have been inspected this year, 450 of which were in the past week alone. In total, 12,500 inspections have been carried out.

Inspection is underway in cooperation with Greek police and local municipalitiesand the complaints in question were mostly received through the app MyCoastand also through citizens' phone calls to local services.

The overall picture after the mass inspections of recent weeks is clearly better than in previous years, as most businesses operating on the beaches complied with the new rules and the new legal framework.

However, many violations were revealed during the inspections. Administrative fines were imposed on all enterprises found to be in violation, and in cases where there was no contract, a total of 36 illegally occupied beach areas were sealed, 14 of them in the last week in Corfu (2), Messinia (2), Ilia (3) and Kefalonia (7).

7 regions of the country that have received the most complaints since the beginning of summer:

• Chalkidiki: 1930 complaints were examined. Inspections were carried out on 24 beaches, about which about 1500 complaints were filed.

• East Attica: 1,579 complaints were examined, 183 of which were in the last 5 days. Inspections were carried out on 22 beaches, i.e. 80% of the beaches about which complaints were filed.

• Preveza: 1,355 complaints processed. Inspectors have begun inspections at 8 beaches, which have received more than 600 complaints.

• Dodecanese: 799 complaints processed. Inspectors began inspections at 16 beaches, where more than 330 complaints were filed.

• Cyclades: The region has seen relatively few complaints this year, with 552 complaints investigated and inspections carried out so far in Mykonos and Paros.

• Corfu: 372 complaints were reviewed. Inspections were carried out on 4 beaches, which received 77 complaints.

• Chania: a total of 264 complaints were reviewed, on 7 beaches.
