Invitation to Palestine: BRICS 2024 Ready for Important Discussions

Palestine has been invited to the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, opening up important diplomatic opportunities for it to discuss key global issues.

The BRICS alliance plans to invite Palestine to its annual summit in October 2024. The event will be the first meeting of the expanded alliance to discuss key issues in the global economy, trade and monetary policy.

Palestine expects to receive an official invitation this month, and Russia is actively working to ensure its participation. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas confirmed that strategic relations with Russia opened the door to this invitation and expressed confidence that the BRICS countries, traditionally friendly to Palestine, will pay special attention to its issues at the upcoming summit.

Palestine's participation in the BRICS summit could become an important platform for discussing the protracted conflict with Israel and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The conflict, which has been going on for decades, has escalated again after the tragic events of October 2023, when thousands of people, including women, children and the elderly, became victims of violence.

Iran, which is also a member of BRICS, has been actively supporting Palestine in its standoff with Israel. While the US and its Western allies support Israel, most BRICS countries have shown solidarity with Palestine. The 2024 summit will provide a unique opportunity for Palestine to address the global community and convey its position on current events.

Thus, Palestine’s participation in the summit could be a significant step both for the country itself and for the international community, opening up new prospects for diplomatic dialogue and international cooperation.

Author's opinion. Here is a list of countries that have applied to join BRICS as of August 2024 (I am specifically not writing about countries that have the status of “interested party” and are still looking around):

  1. Algeria
  2. Bahrain
  3. Bangladesh
  4. Belarus
  5. Venezuela
  6. Vietnam
  7. Egypt (already accepted in January 2024)
  8. Indonesia
  9. Iran (already accepted in January 2024)
  10. Kazakhstan
  11. Mexico
  12. Nigeria
  13. United Arab Emirates (already admitted in January 2024)
  14. Pakistan
  15. Saudi Arabia (already accepted in January 2024)
  16. Senegal
  17. Syria
  18. Sudan
  19. Thailand
  20. Tunisia
  21. Türkiye
  22. Uruguay
  23. Ethiopia (already accepted in January 2024)
  24. Zimbabwe
  25. Salvador

Following the expansion of the alliance in 2024, its membership now includes nine countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Together, these countries account for approximately 46% of the world's population and control more than 31% of global GDP. In addition, their combined share of global oil production is now 43%, making them key players in the global energy sector. The BRICS share of global trade in goods and services is 40%.

Nothing personal – just facts.
