Humanitarian corridors will be opened by Ukraine in Kursk region

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk reported on her Telegram channel that Ukraine will open humanitarian corridors in the Kursk region both towards the Russian Federation and towards Ukraine.

She explainedthat Russian civilians living in the territory of the Russian Federation, where a security zone is being created, are protected by humanitarian law. Against the backdrop of military action, Ukraine plans to open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of residents. To protect regions bordering Russia, Ukraine is creating a security zone on Russian territory. This zone is inhabited by Russian civilians, so the Ukrainian military is planning to:

• conducting humanitarian operations in support of Russian civilians in the border areas of the Kursk region;
• opening of humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians both towards Russia and towards Ukraine;
• access for international humanitarian organizations to the security zone for the purposes of humanitarian response and monitoring of the humanitarian situation.

Yesterday, August 14, Commander-in-Chief Syrsky reported that Ukrainian military continue to conduct an offensive operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. The Ukrainian Armed Forces control about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.

Russians from territories under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are being offered evacuation and humanitarian aid. The Ministry for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories has opened a 24-hour hotline for residents of the Kursk region who wish to evacuate to Ukraine or who need humanitarian aid. “Ukraine complies with all norms of international humanitarian law and will provide the civilians of the Kursk region with the necessary protection and support,” Vereshchuk emphasized.

Russian authorities are also making certain decisions regarding the citizens of Kursk region – Refugees from the Kursk region will be sent to the territories of Ukraine captured by the Russian Federation.

Residents of the border areas of the Kursk region, forced to leave their homes, will be sent to the occupied territories of the Zaporizhia region. By information DW, this was reported by the acting governor of Kursk region Alexey Smirnov. The decision was made after his conversation with the Russian-appointed governor of Zaporizhia region Yevgeny Balitsky.

To accommodate the Russians, Balitsky proposed using “sanatoriums and boarding houses on the shores of the Azov Sea, located from Berdyansk to Kirillovka,” Smirnov said. According to him, the first flights to “deliver people” to the Zaporizhzhya region will be organized “in the near future.”
