Holiday on August 15: how it is paid, what you need to know


General Confederation of Trade Unions of Greece GSEEthrough the information centre for workers and the unemployed of the Confederation (KE.PEA/GSEE), announced the payment procedure for employees of private enterprises who will work on August 15, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The celebration of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which falls on Thursday in 2024, is established by law as mandatory day off (Article 193 of Decree 80/2022, Article 60 of Law 4808/2021). On mandatory holidays The hiring of workers and the operation of enterprises, with the exception of those that are required by law to work on Sundays and mandatory holidays, are prohibited. Employees have the right to:

  1. if they are paid a daily wage, then they will be paid their normal daily wage plus a 75 percent premium, which will be calculated on their legal hourly wage for the number of hours they work,
  2. in the case of employees receiving a monthly salary:
    1. if they are employees of an enterprise who do not work on Sundays and public holidays and will work in exceptional cases on August 15, then they are entitled to 1/25 of their normally paid salary plus 75% of the statutory hourly wage supplement for the number of hours worked,
    2. If they are employees of a company who legally work on Sundays and other statutory holidays, they are entitled to only a 75% premium, calculated at 1/25 of their legal daily wage for the number of hours worked.

In addition, employees should know:

  • Replacing a day of due rest (day off) day of compulsory leave ne is legal.
  • Employees on leave also are entitled to payment on August 15, but without taking this day into account in the working days of vacation.
  • If more favourable conditions apply to the increase in pay for work on a public holiday or Sunday (for example, a collective bargaining agreement, work regulations, customs or company practice), these conditions shall prevail.
