To exhausted parents "write out a prescription" on holiday in spa hotels or chalets

Prescriptions in Germany are not only for medicines and tests. The country has a long tradition of what is called “kur”, which literally translates as treatment or resort.

Doctors prescribe a four-week spa or mountain holiday. The prescription includes “Heilbad” or medicinal baths in spa towns such as Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden, Bad Ems, where healing springs are located. The “rest” treatment is most often used when the parent has reached a critical point.

With an emphasis on preventive and restorative care“spa/sanatorium treatment” is often prescribed to exhausted/burnt-out parents. Residents of Germany are entitled to treatment every four years, with the vast majority of days of the four-week vacation covered by insurance.

Symptoms that doctors pay attention to: Both mental and physical disorders are taken into account.

“Symptoms include severe irritability, lethargy, constant lack of energy, fatigue, and insomnia. Patients often “just cry” and usually feel overwhelmed by even small everyday tasks. It is necessary to identify the need for preventive and therapeutic measures as early as possible, especially since the waiting time for a place in a sanatorium can be very long,” the expert explains.

According to MGW, 44,525 mothers and 2,320 fathers received preventive or restorative treatment at MGW clinics in 2022. Most mothers treated at MGW facilities are between 36 and 45 years old. MGW statistics show that mothers typically work part-time (20-35 hours) and fathers work full-time.
