Armageddon in Barnabas, thick ominous smoke over Athens (video)

On Sunday, August 11, after 15:00, a fire broke out in Varnava, near a residential area. Strong winds contribute to the rapid spread of the fire and make it difficult for firefighters to work.

A huge force of firefighters was deployed to put out the fire, but even the fire engine was engulfed in flames – fortunately, its crew managed to abandon the vehicle. Two people with breathing problems from heavy smoke have already been taken to Sismanoglio.

Vasiliki Kavallari, deputy governor of Attica, announced an extraordinary emergency meeting of the coordination body, which will begin immediately, to assess the situation and develop further tactics to combat the fire. And the flames continue to spread, reaching the first houses. The fire, according to the latest information, is moving towards Lake Marathon. Residents are urged to leave their homes and head towards Grammatiko, Kapandriti and Marathon. The Mayor of Marathon announced: “Residents of Kalenji and Puriki must evacuate immediately.”

Thick smoke enveloped Barnabas, Kalendzi and neighboring villages. A fire is raging in the agroforestry area near Varnava. Traffic is difficult on the roads:

  • Επαρχιακή Οδός Καπανδριτίου – Βαρνάβα
  • Επαρχιακή Οδός παραλία Βαρνάβα- Βαρνάβα
  • Επαρχιακή Οδός Γραμματικού – Βαρνάβα.

According to the fire service, ground and air forces have been reinforced: There are 165 firefighters with 9 fire brigades, 30 vehicles, 7 aircraft and 5 helicopters.

The sky in the northern suburbs of Athens was covered with black smoke.

Given that the situation remains challenging, please pay attention to the instructions for protection against smoke, fire and their residues (dust and ash), recommended by the competent Committee of Public Health Experts:

1. Move away from the larger fire area if possible.

2. If evacuation is not possible, stay indoors and keep the air clean by following these recommendations:

• Keep windows and doors closed.
• Use an air conditioner with room air recirculation and well-maintained filters.
• Avoid smoking indoors.
• Avoid grilling.
• Avoid using aerosols (insecticides, air fresheners, hairsprays).
• Avoid using candles for lighting.
• Avoid using a vacuum cleaner.

3. Avoid unnecessary movement and active recreation, especially for vulnerable groups (people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, the elderly, children, pregnant women) in the presence of smoke and ash.

4. If movement is considered necessary, remember:
• Use a well-fitting mask with a high respiratory protection rating (FFP2 or 3) – “surgical” or cloth masks do NOT protect against smoke or ash inhalation.

5. When using a car to commute to work, remember:
• Turn on your car headlights during the day to avoid possible accidents in places with poor visibility,
• Set your vehicle's air conditioning system to recirculate air inside the vehicle to minimize smoke.

6. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as:

• persistent cough

• difficulty and/or wheezing when breathing

• tightness or pain in the chest

• tachycardia

• nausea

• unusual tiredness or dizziness.
