Tomato growers: "Production costs are rising rapidly"

Tomato growers claim: “We are producing products without knowing whether we will be able to offset the sharply increased production costs.”

As Mega noted in its report on Friday morning 9/8, climate change with dry winters and water shortages, as well as extreme weather events like those that occurred in Thessaly in the spring, appear to be “absorb” animal husbandry and agriculture.

“The problem exists in all of Thessaly, mainly in the prefectures of Karditsa, but in the region of Karl the problem is more serious. In Pharsalus it is not so great. This is a problem that will bother us for years to come,” says farmer Socrates Aliftiras.

The cost of production is sky-high, and prices for agricultural products are inversely proportional. With the exception of tomatoes, which have a fair profit, cotton is too cheap, corn too, wheat at 23 cents. We produce products without knowing whether we will recoup their cost price,” he said in his statement.

The same problems are faced by younger producers who have decided to return to their land and engage in the food sector.

I graduated from university, after which I decided to return to the place where I grew up, because I liked it, and I try to go there to invest every year,” noted Dimitris Anagnostopoulos. “It's worth it, but we're taking too many risks. We have a field on which we spent 20,000 euros, and we don’t know what the income will be. We are talking about only one area. However, we are optimistic, we are trying” he concluded.
