Farmers in despair as production costs for growing produce skyrocket

Climate change with dry winters and water shortages, as well as recent extreme weather events such as those that occurred in Thessaly in the spring, are damaging livestock and agriculture.

“The problem exists throughout Thessaly, mainly in the prefecture of Karditsa. However, in the area of Lake Karla the problem is even more serious. This is an issue that will worry us in the coming years,” says farmer Sokratis Aleiftiras.

“Production costs are rising rapidly. At the same time, prices for agricultural products are rising proportionally. If you exclude tomatoes, the price of which is still satisfactory, then the price of cotton will be very low, as well as corn and wheat – 23 cents. We are “killing ourselves” in the fields, not even knowing whether the production costs will be justified,” he added.

The same problems are faced by younger producers who have decided to return to the villages after graduating and enter the raw materials sector dynamically. “It is worth it, but we are taking too much risk. We have a field in which we have invested 20,000 euros and we do not know what income we will get. It is only a plot of land. However, we are optimistic, we are trying,” added the respondent.
