Next-generation buses in Athens and Thessaloniki, and hydrogen-powered by the end of 2027


The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is systematically transitioning public urban transport to new generation fuel.

Already 250 electric buses are running on the streets of the capital and Thessaloniki, said the competent minister Christos Staikouras. In Athens, 1/3 of the total fleet has been renewed with electric buses, while in Thessaloniki a charging station has been opened and another 140 buses have been put into operation. According to the schedule presented by the Minister of Infrastructure, contracts and tenders for the renewal of the bus fleet until 2027 have already been activated or are still being concluded. In particular, the new public transport fleet is:

  • 250 new electric buses.
  • 300 buses running on compressed natural gas.
  • Tender for 100 buses, 18 meters long.
  • Tender for 200 buses, 12 meters long.
  • Tender announcement for 211 buses in East and West Attica. They are expected to be in operation until the end of 2024 (the contractor is 6 KTEL companies and two tourist offices).
  • Leasing competition for 300 buses in Attica (200 and 100 diesel and electric).
  • New tender for the supply of 700 additional buses with slow and fast charging in Athens and Thessaloniki.
  • 200 new trolleybuses in Athens (by tender).
  • 50-100 hydrogen-powered buses.
  • 700 buses under a new tender until 2027.

Concerning the issue of installing air conditioners on metro linesthen this is one of the government's priorities, but for now resources are being sought for its implementation. WithThe cost of just the 24 wiring lines needed to install the air conditioners is 39 million eurosAt the same time, the government apparatus is seeking around 20 million euros to improve the operation of lifts and other necessary interventions in the metro system.
