Greece in top ten tourism destinations

Greece ranks 9th in global tourism growth and is also among the leaders in terms of growth in inbound tourism spending since the start of 2024.

Greek tourism's “flourishing” began at a rapid pace in 2023, when the country confidently took ninth place among the top ten countries in the world. This was, as the World Tourism Organization's World Tourism Barometer reports, its first appearance at such a high level.

In 2019, Greece ranked 13th (31.3 million tourists), behind Japan (31.9 million) in 12th place. By 2023, Greece's tourism sector had achieved significant success, with 32.7 million arrivals, ranking ninth in the world.

The top eight countries in the world ranking for 2023 are France, Spain, the United States, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Germany. In four years, the United Arab Emirates rose from 19th place in 2019 to 12th in 2023, while Saudi Arabia rose from 25th to 14th place.

In the first half of 2024, European tourism reflected global trends and showed significant growth. According to the European Travel Commission's report “EUROPEAN TOURISM: TRENDS AND OUTLOOK, Q2 2024”, International travel to Europe increased by 12% compared to the previous year.

Greece stood out among the leading countries with the most significant growth in arrivals, comparing favourably with both the corresponding period of 2023 and 2019. Compared to 2023, Greece ranked third in terms of growth in international tourist arrivals, achieving a solid growth of 24.4%. Malta leads the way with an impressive 31.3% growth, followed by Norway with 28%.

Greece is positioned among the leaders in terms of growth in inbound tourism spending since the beginning of 2024, currently holding the second position with a notable increase of 25%. Spain leads the category with a 25% increase, followed by Italy with 20% and France with 16%.
