Greek roads were stained with blood in August, with fourteen deaths in road accidents this month alone.
Hundreds injured in road accidents
452 people were injured in 384 accidents:
- 14 people died in 14 fatal accidents,
- In 16 serious accidents, 17 people were seriously injured,
- In 354 minor road accidents, 421 people received minor injuries.
Main causes of road accidents
The main causes of road accidents were, emphasizes CNN Greece, driving without due care and attention, and violation of traffic rules by both drivers and pedestrians. The severity of injuries to drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles was in many cases aggravated by the lack of protective helmets. Drunk driving is also a huge problem.
What the Attica traffic police recorded
As part of the targeted actions of the Attica Traffic Police Department to maintain public order and improve road safety in the region, 18,997 violations were registered in August, of which 1,131 were minor. Among them:
- 789 offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol, of which 58 were minor,
- 370 speeding violations,
- 262 violations of driving through a red traffic light,
- 177 offences for using a mobile phone,
- 696 offenses for not wearing a seat belt,
- 949 offences for failure to use a protective helmet,
- 92 offenses for dangerous maneuvers.
