When the heat subsides: a meteorologist's commentary

The head of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), Theodoros Kolidas, spoke about when the abnormal heat will finally subside, but his forecast is disappointing for at least the next ten days.

Mr Kolidas cites two forecast models, stressing that “it is too early to draw firm conclusions about when the heat wave will end.” However, it will not happen before July 26-27at least in ten days, starting from today. And during the rest of the period, the thermometer will show a mark of about 40 ° C. This will be the daytime air temperature in many areas of the country.

Mr. Kolidas cites estimates from two forecast models and, as he characteristically writes, “the much-desired coolness (blue color) will arrive between July 26 and 27.”

Already today, 17/07, the inhabitants of Greece are experiencing the peak of the heat wave (the heat wave began at the beginning of last week), with very high temperatures prevailing both during the day and at night, which leads to increased risk (heat stress), which will occur in almost the entire territory of the country, reports the scientific group meteo.gr.

In particular, according to the biometeorological warning system HEAT-ALARM and as can be seen in the group of maps below, extreme heat stress and relative risk expected on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 July 2024 throughout Northern Macedonia and Thrace (Evros):
