Germany has been flooded with thousands of sex workers and laborers during Euro 2024, most of them from abroad.

German hotels, bars and restaurants are counting increased profits, but the tournament has not only boosted the hospitality industry – the sex business is experiencing a real boom, tells Euronews.

Throughout the last month, estimates show, Due to Euro 2024, there were more than 100,000 prostitutes working in the country. The erotic service Erobella has calculated that almost 14,000 sex workers and workers have arrived in the host cities to provide intimate services to football fans. Social worker Gerhard Schönborn says:

“They come mainly from Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland… They sell themselves here simply because they are poor.”

Jeanne Valentin, a sex worker with 26 years of experience:

“Most of the clients live in the center of Berlin. Guests staying in hotels order an escort when they want to have dinner in company. Or they call and order a girl to their room.”

Prostitution in Germany has been legally permitted since 2002. Brothels operate legally. There are more than 30 of them in Frankfurt, and 90 in Hamburg. In Berlin, they even opened special street booths to provide sex services.

According to recently adopted laws, any establishment of this kind must be officially registered. However, Testing of female and male employees for HIV and sexually transmitted infections is not mandatory for obtaining a license.
