A Dagestan suspect awaiting deportation to Russia hangs himself in Austria

A 40-year-old terror suspect has committed suicide in Vienna by hanging himself with shoelaces while awaiting transfer to Russia at a deportation centre.

A native of Dagestan, as the investigation established, planned terrorist attacks together with a citizen of Tajikistan. He committed suicide using a kitchen towel and shoe laces. The man was accused of links to the Islamic State and planning attacks on Cologne Cathedral and St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, reports Kronen-Zeitung on Thursday, July 11.

The investigation established that the men were planning terrorist attacks on the eve of the past Christmas and New Year. Both were detained several days before the planned date. It is noted that the Russian was considered a member of “Vilayat Khorasan” – a branch of the Islamic State in Afghanistan, which claimed responsibility for the shootings at Crocus City Hall in the Russian Federation.

According to the publication, after the expiration of the preliminary detention period, the suspects were transferred to a special police center, where they were held pending deportation. The body of the Dagestani was found in the cell several hours before.

Let us remind you, terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall complex in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region, occurred on the evening of March 22: several armed men opened fire on concert-goers and started a fire. According to the latest data, 144 people were killed and 551 were injured as a result of the terrorist attack.
