UK: Sunak admits defeat, Labour officially wins election (video)

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has acknowledged the Conservative Party's defeat in the snap parliamentary elections on July 4.

He made this statement on the morning of July 5 in the town of Northallerton, where his constituency is located. After the results for his constituency were announced (Sunak won there), the British Prime Minister noted during a short speech that “the Labour Party won this general election”:

“I have called Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory. I am now heading to London where I will have more to say about today's result before I leave the job of Prime Minister to which I have given my all. I have much to learn and much to think about.”

This afternoon, July 5, after an audience with the British king, 61-year-old Keir Starmer will become the new Prime Minister of Great Britain. The official count of results by constituency already confirms that the Labour Party has received 328 seats in the House of Commons – this exceeds the minimum majority of 326 mandates.

Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party has won a majority in the House of Commons following a snap general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule in Britain, writes Air Force.

Keir Starmer and shadow finance minister Rachel Reeves, who is tipped to be the second most important post in the next government, won their constituencies comfortably. In a short speech after the results were announced, Starmer said:

“Change starts right here because this is your democracy, your community, your future. You voted. Now it's time for us to deliver on our promises.”

Congratulating Starmer on his victory, Sunak said:

“Today the transfer of power from hand to hand will take place in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. This should give us all confidence in the stability and future of our country. The British people have today delivered a sobering verdict, much to learn… and I accept responsibility for the defeat.”
