French sword 'Durendal', nailed to a rock in Rocamadour for 1,300 years, mysteriously disappears

The French sword “Durendal”, known as the French version of King Arthur's legendary Excalibur, nailed to a rock in the town of Rocamadour, has mysteriously disappeared from the town where, according to local legend, it had been hanging nailed to the rock for 1,300 years.

The sword was one of the main attractions of southern France, The Telegraph reports. For centuries it was believed that it once belonged to Roland, the legendary knight who fought bravely for Charlemagne, king of the Franks, in the eighth century.

Representatives of the French community in the Lot prefecture of Occitanie have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a sword that was removed from its place on a rock wall about 30 metres above the ground.

According to legend, Durendal was an indestructible sword and the sharpest in the world, capable of cutting through stone with one blow. Its magical properties are described in the 11th-century epic poem “The Song of Roland.”
