France: Government official attacked during election campaign

French government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot, a member of the French parliament and a member of President Emmanuel Macron's Renewal party, was attacked by several people late Wednesday evening.

How reports Politico, she and her team were putting up campaign posters in their constituency in Hauts-de-Seine, on the western side of Paris, when they were attacked by a group of people. Thévenot was unharmed, but a member of her team was taken to hospital with a broken jaw. Four people were arrested. Gabriel Attal, the French prime minister, condemned the attack and called for an end to political violence:

“This evening, candidate Prisca Thevenot and members of her campaign team were attacked by four people in Meudon while they were putting up campaign posters. Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy. They have no place in our Republic. Let us reject the climate of violence and hatred that is gaining momentum. I call for immediate action.”

The president of the far-right National Rally, Jordan Bardella, promised “full support” for Thevenot.

Attal believes a cross-party bid to deprive the far-right National Rally of a majority in the second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday could be successful. President Macron has called for “democratic unity” in the second round to counter the far right.

As our publication reported, on Tuesday, July 2, more than two hundred candidates, opponents of the “National Unification”, announced their decision refuse to participate in the second round of elections, in order to avoid “scattering” the voters' votes and prevent the far-right party from coming to power.
