Over the weekend, a number of US military bases in Europe, including in Germany, were placed on high alert due to fears of a possible terrorist attack.
This was reported by DPA and AFP, citing two unnamed US government officials, who specified that the Pentagon had announced a second level of security at these bases.
As CNN reports, this level of security, known as “Charlie,” is set when the Pentagon receives credible information about a possible terrorist attack. There is only one higher level of security, “Delta,” which is set when a terrorist attack has already occurred or is imminent. A U.S. Defense Department official told Fox News on condition of anonymity:
“There is credible information indicating an attack on US bases next week.”
Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced, without giving details about the nature of the threat:
“Due to a number of factors that could impact the safety of American soldiers and their families in Europe, U.S. European Command is redoubling its efforts to increase vigilance during the summer months.”
