Last night, Kazakh journalist and oppositionist Aidos Sadykov died in a Kyiv hospital after an assassination attempt on him on June 18.

On the day of the fatal incident, reports prosecutor's office, a man approached the car where the Sadykovs were and shot the journalist in the head. He was taken to the hospital, where he spent 13 days in intensive care. They were unable to save him.

On June 20, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine named suspects in the attempted murder case – two citizens of Kazakhstan, Meiram Karatayev and Altay Zhakanbayev. After committing the crime, they went into hiding and later left for Moldova, writes “Krym.Realii” publication. On June 22, the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan announced that Zhakanbayev had surrendered to the police.

Altay Zhakanbayev and Meiram Karatayev were arrested in absentia in Ukraine and put on the international wanted list. The Kazakh authorities have already stated that they will not extradite the suspect in the attempted assassination of Sadykov to Ukraine.

Natalya Sadykova, the opposition leader’s wife, has repeatedly stated that the Kazakh authorities are behind the attempted murder of her husband, and that “the main beneficiary is the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.”

The Kazakh authorities call the woman's statements “provocations and insinuations that do not correspond to reality.” President Tokayev, commenting on what happened, declared Astana's readiness to cooperate with Kiev, including through Interpol.

Aidos Sadykov is known for his criticism of the President of Kazakhstan. The activist accuses Tokayev of a pro-Russian position. The blogger also spoke about “Kremlin agents” in the entourage of the President of Kazakhstan. Last fall, the Sadykovs were put on the wanted list by the Kazakh authorities on charges of inciting hatred.
