Finland's parliament has approved a defense cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in December 2023, giving the United States access to 15 military facilities.
The agreement concerns four air bases, a military port and a railway in northern Finland. The agreement also includes warehouses for military equipment, reported state broadcaster Yle on Monday, July 1. The warehouses will be located along the routes leading to the Russian border.
According to the agreement, the US will be able to deploy its military and equipment to these facilities. Finnish authorities will take on the security of the sites that the Americans will use.
Antti Häkkänen, Finland's Minister of Defence, said Helsinki and Washington planned to deepen defence cooperation. The US has a similar agreement with more than twenty countries. The contract will create a permanent base for the US military presence in Finland.
