SBU prevented a coup and detained provocateurs planning to seize the Verkhovna Rada (video)

The provocateurs detained by the Security Service of Ukraine in Kyiv face up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property for preparing to organize riots in the capital and seize the Verkhovna Rada immediately after Constitution Day. The SBU statement says:

“According to the investigation, the group was headed by a co-founder of a public organization that has been known for its anti-Ukrainian actions since 2015. Under the guise of holding a so-called “veche,” the perpetrators planned to announce the “removal from power” of the current military-political leadership of Ukraine. Then they hoped to seize the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and block its work.”

According to the SBU, the organizers planned to hold a supposedly peaceful meeting in the center of the capital in order to gather people:

“But most of the participants in the event wanted to use it “in the dark” – without revealing to them the true intentions regarding the provocations. The perpetrators planned to disseminate information about the “unrest” in Kyiv through domestic and foreign information resources. In this way, they hoped to destabilize the socio-political situation within our country, which would play in favor of the Russian Federation.”

To bring the criminal plan to life, writes “UP”, the main organizer attracted several accomplices – representatives of public organizations from Kyiv, Dnipro and other regions. They communicated with each other in various messengers, and meetings, if necessary, were organized in small groups of no more than three people.

The Security Service of Ukraine reports that it exposed the illegal intentions of the defendants in advance, documented their subversive activities and detained the organizers. During searches of the premises of the arrested persons, ammunition and weapons, mobile phones, computer equipment, and rough notes with evidence of criminal actions were found.

The detainees were charged under Part 1, 2, 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code: actions and calls for actions aimed at violent change or overthrow of the constitutional order or the seizure of state power. The court ordered their detention as a preventive measure. The SBU stated:

“The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice. The perpetrators face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.”
