Zakynthos: Locals sing and dance despite a forest fire raging nearby (video)

It doesn't matter that the Titanic is sinking, the main thing is to have time to have fun! This is probably what the residents of the town of Agia Marina on the island of Zante (Zakynthos) thought and continued to dance while the forest fire burned around them.

Video posted on social media late on Sunday, June 30, showed villagers dancing in circles and enjoying themselves wildly at a fiesta as the sky turned red as flames engulfed a nearby mountain.

While the locals sing and dance, the bells of the village church begin to ring the alarm, warning the population.

The video has drawn mixed comments on social media, with some users calling the footage awkward.

“Dancing at a village fair while the forest is literally burning overhead is the epitome of the stupidity of these people.” – wrote one of the users. “Zakynthos is also burning. The fire is out of control, but the party is in full swing,” – wrote another.

Speaking to Mega TV, the man in charge of civil defense in the Zakynthos municipality, Dimitris Adamopoulos, said the fire was about 1,000 meters from the village. He added that the fiesta, an annual event in honor of All Saints under the auspices of the local priest, ended as planned shortly before midnight.

The Zakynthos fire service spent the entire night battling a fire that broke out in a forested area in the Agia Marina area. It is worth noting that on Monday the Department of Civil Protection of the Zakynthos Municipality reported that the fire situation had improved, but remained critical.

The fire broke out late in the evening and no homes were in danger as the flames were mostly in hard to reach areas. There are 35 firefighters, a fire brigade on foot, 10 engines and volunteers at the scene, with air support expected in the morning.
