Orange alarm mode issued in the waters of the Aegean Sea, eastern and southern parts. Strong winds with speeds up to 10 (with gusts up to 12+) on the Beaufort scale began on the evening of Friday, June 28, and will reach their peak on Saturday afternoon.

What is especially dangerous about this wind now? The fire season is still going on, so of course there is a threat of fire spreading. If a fire breaks out, the flames will spread for kilometers in a matter of minutes. In such a wind it is dangerous to go out to sea and swim on the windward beaches.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection held a coordination meeting on the high risk of fires due to very strong winds: the 2nd stage of operational readiness of fire brigades is being implemented and aerial surveillance patrols will be in place (as far as possible), as well as patrols by fire brigades, police and the country's armed forces.

According to EMY, wind On Saturday, June 29, there will be a wind from the north, with a force of 4 to 5 in the west, and 8 to 9 in the Aegean region on the Beaufort scale, with a gradual weakening expected from Sunday. Temperature will reach 34-36°C in the north, 35-37°C in the west, 33-36°C in the rest of the mainland and 29-32°C in the east of the island country, in some places in the south – 34-35°C.

Regions covered by the orange alert:

  • Attica and the east coast of the Peloponnese (Corinthia, Argolis, Arcadia, Laconia),
  • Crete,
  • North Aegean region (Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria),
  • South Aegean Region (Cyclades),
  • Region of Central Greece (Boeotia, Phocis, Phthiotis, Evia).

We strongly recommend that you stay away from water, secure large structures near your house (if you live in the countryside) and be careful with fire!

How likely this forecast is is a difficult question, since recently meteorologists' forecasts have been correct by no more than 50%. Nevertheless, a strong north wind, which in gusts can reach a speed of up to 40 meters per second, is not a joke, but a very dangerous natural factor.
