State of emergency declared on Leros island due to water shortage


The General Secretariat of Civil Defense announced on the island of Leros in the Dodecanese state of emergency, due to the occurrence of water shortage phenomena. It is valid for one month.

The decision, signed by the Secretary General of Civil Defense Vassilis Papageorgiou, states the following:

“We decide to declare a state of civil defense emergency in the municipality of Leros in the regional unit of Kalymnos of the South Aegean region in order to eliminate the consequences that may arise due to the phenomenon of water shortage in the above-mentioned area.”

The state of emergency is in effect from the date of publication of this document (June 25) for one (1) month, i.e. until July 25, 2024Upon expiration of the specified period, the civil defense state of emergency will be cancelled without a new decision being made.

According to cnngreece.gr, the municipal authorities of Leros blame the current situation on the previous municipal authorities, complaining that they did not start maintaining the desalination plants.
