A 53-year-old Frenchman was killed and his wife seriously injured in a road accident on Thursday in the Chania region of Crete, where the couple were on holiday.
A rented car driven by a man collided head-on with another vehicle at the exit of the village of Vrysses in Apokoronas. The speed of the collision was such that the fire brigade had to be called to extract the man's body. He was unconscious when he was picked up by ambulance and taken to hospital, while his wife was seriously injured and taken to the intensive care unit of Chania Hospital. Her condition is considered critical.
The 25-year-old Greek van driver involved in the collision is being treated for minor injuries at the same hospital. The collision was caused by one of the vehicles driving into the oncoming lane, sources said.
The traffic police of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) are currently conducting an investigation.
