Attiki Odos will be connected to Vouliagmenis Avenue: a new major tunnel for the capital

The priority task of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is the construction of the Ilioupolis tunnel, a project of particular importance for the region.

The construction of the tunnel, as an extension of Attiki Odos to Vouliagmenis Avenue, promises to provide faster access to the Elliniko complex, as well as improve traffic conditions.

According to Deputy Minister in charge of infrastructure, Nikos Tahiaos, connecting the Ymittos ring road through the Ilioupolis tunnel with Vouliagmenis Avenue is a large-scale project. According to available information, a group of large construction companies submitted a single standard proposal for this project, and Mr. Tahiaos noted that “the ministry will study it.”

However, given that the opportunities for financing projects from public funds are limited, the ministry seeks to minimize the state's financial contribution.

We remind you that “standard proposals” are a tool that ensures that individuals submit to the state complete and costed proposals for projects with a proven contribution to the country's economy. If these proposals are accepted, a tender for the transfer of the project will be announced.

The project concerns the connection of the peripheral road of Imittos with Vouliagmeni Avenue through the Ilioupolis tunnel, the length of which will be about 3 km. It will consist of two separate branches, one for each traffic stream. During construction it is planned to use modern technology. Tunnel starts approximately from the Sakketa camps and ends at Vouliagmenis Avenue, at the height of the border of the districts of Agios Dimitrios and Ilioupoli.

Drivers will be able to get from Katehaki Avenue to Vouliagmenis Avenue in just 10 minutes (currently 30 minutes), which will mean “freeing” Vouliagmenis from traffic lights and turning it into a motorway.

In addition to decongesting Vouliagmenis Avenue, there will be improved traffic data on Careas Avenueand also provided faster access to the Elliniko complex, which, after its commissioning, will receive tens of thousands of visitors every day.

Ilioupolis Tunnel with a budget of approximately 500 million euros is an important project which, combined with the creation Elliniko on the Athens Riviera, will change the road map in the region.
