“The noose is tightening”: tough fines for uninsured vehicles

The Greek Ministry of Finance, since the publication of the new bill in the Official Gazette, begins electronic cross-checks and the implementation of stricter ones for those who have not repaid their debts.

The new law stipulates that those found using an uninsured vehicle will have to pay a fine of 500 euros for passenger and other vehicles of all types, 250 euros for two-wheelers and 1,000 euros for buses and public vehicles. If a debt is also discovered road tax, then the full amount of the debt and the corresponding fine will be collected.

If the owner complies with his vehicle insurance obligations within 10 business days from the date of notification of the fine or the decision to reject the appeal, the fines will be canceled.

If violations are detected, the electronic check is carried out again within a period of 3 to 12 months after the fine is imposed. If it is determined that the owner has not complied with the requirements at the time of the new inspection, the vehicle registration certificate and license plates will be confiscated and returned only upon presentation of the appropriate insurance policy or certificate of non-payment of registration fees, as applicable, and proof of payment of the fine.

Fines for illegal use of vehicles have also become higher. In the case of using a vehicle that is permanently rendered inactive or deregistered, the owner is subject to a fine of 10,000 eurosas well as tolls due on the vehicle for the year of discovery.

If a vehicle for which an application for immobilization has been applied for is found to be in traffic or parked in a location other than where it was declared, the immobilization is lifted and ΑΑΔΕ imposes a fine of 10,000 euros in addition to the registration fees and the fine for non-payment.

It is noted that control is carried out on the basis of an inspection order or based on the results of an electronic cross-check carried out by ΑΑΔΕ by obtaining data from highway concessionaires, as well as using a special application for mobile devices to scan license plates.

If the violation is repeated within five years, the fine is tripled (up to 30,000 euros) and the driver's license of the owner or holder of the vehicle is confiscated for 3 years.

At the same time, according to the new rules, we are able to final inaction automatically there are vehicles over 40 years oldin respect of which either the owner does not make updates within three months after due notice, or they belong to deceased persons who, during the last 15 years, have not been settled in the aggregate in terms of payment of the relevant traffic or use fees, or, where provided, in terms of annual review of registration authorization, insurance obligations and inspections KTEO
