Fire in Koropi: civil aviation service announcement for flights at El. Venizelos"

The Civil Aviation Authority has taken emergency measures for flights at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Spata due to the ongoing fire in Koropi.

According to the information, the runways for landing and taking off aircraft have been changed, and until now flights to Eleftherios Venizelos are running smoothly. Depending on the conditions of the fire and the development of the fire, measures will be revised.

As previously reported, the fire in the Koropi area began around 12 o'clock. It is noted that firefighters and residents of Koropi are fighting a difficult battle against the flames, trying to contain it in difficult conditions.

Fire service representative Vasilis Vartakogiannis said at a briefing that the fire broke out in the area of the Evelpidon school and is still ongoing. The fire spread quickly due to strong winds that reached 8 on the Beaufort scale. Therefore, it was necessary to issue warning 112, and then two more messages about the evacuation of residents of the Lambrika and Quichi areas. “The safety of residents is paramount, the forces are constantly being strengthened,” he said.

According to a fire service spokesman, 300 new fires have been recorded, meaning a new fire starts approximately every ten minutes.

Participating in extinguishing fires are:

  • At Markopoulo there were 14 vehicles, 30 firefighters, two EMODE foot sections, local authority water carriers, a METPE team, 3 helicopters and 4 aircraft.
  • In Moutsouna Naxos there were 6 firefighters with 3 engines and 1 helicopter, a message was sent to 112.
  • In Karystos there were 62 firefighters in 21 vehicles, two EMODE foot sections and two helicopters, assisted by water tankers from the local authorities and the Greek police.

Mr. Pastras emphasized: “Weather conditions this week are extremely unfavorable due to drought, high temperatures and winds with gusts up to 8 points on the Beaufort scale. Such conditions are ideal for the rapid spread of fire, which makes it difficult for the fire brigade. We ask our fellow citizens to be our allies in this difficult fight , which we conduct every day. We remind you that it is strictly prohibited:

  • burning dry grass and branches or removing garbage;
  • use of equipment that causes sparks, for example, circular saws, welding machines;
  • outdoor barbecue;
  • fumigation of bees;
  • throwing lighted cigarettes, and any other actions that could lead to a fire.”

“If you notice smoke or fire, please report it immediately by calling 199 or 112. We are all part of this effort. We encourage everyone to support the fire service in its mission to protect life, property and our country's forests,” he noted.
