New lawsuit filed against ND ministers over Tempi train crash

A new lawsuit filed against former transport minister Kostas Karamanlis and his deputy Michalis Papadopoulos over the 2023 Tempi train accident has been submitted to parliament.

The lawsuit, brought jointly by the victim's partner and parents, accuses former New Democracy ministers of dereliction of duty. The case was transferred by the judiciary to parliament because the charges were brought against an official, and this requires the approval of a majority of deputies.

The lawsuit also targets the Larissa station master and “any competent third party”, such as the Secretary General of Transport, the heads of the Organization of Hellenic Railways (O.S.E.) and the national railway operator TrainOSE, or the General Manager, who was required by law to ensure “the smooth and safe operation of trains and to ensure that OSE and TRAINOSE are equipped with a remote control system, a second station master, and any other suitable means or means that could have prevented a fatal train accident.”

In addition, it refers to persons putting passengers at risk, responsible for insufficient maintenance of trains or any other actions arising from the prosecutor's investigation.
