The Panhellenic Seafarers' Union (ΠΕΝΕΝ) in its statement regarding yesterday Houthi attacks on Greek-owned ship in Yemen reported that there was at least one dead sailor.

Iran-backed Houthis took responsibility for assault, claiming to have attacked a Liberian-flagged vessel called Tutor with maritime drone. In a statement, a Houthi army spokesman said the ship was attacked “using a surface drone, several drones and ballistic missiles,” adding that the ship was “severely damaged and in danger of sinking.”

The ship was attacked “because the company that owns the ship violated the decision to ban it port calls in occupied Palestinethe statement says.

Double punch

As became known, “At approximately 6:30 a.m., 67 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah, the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier TUTOR was hit in the stern by an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). In the following hours, the ship was hit again, this time by an aircraft-based missile. As a result, communication with the vessel has been lost and it is unable to maneuver as the engine room has been damaged by the USV. Water has entered the vessel and it is no longer under crew control. At least one person is reported to be injured on board.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, June 12. In a statement, the Houthis confirmed that they carried out “a military operation against the TUTOR ship in the Red Sea using naval drones, aerial drones and ballistic missiles.” The ship carrying coal was seriously damaged and may sink.

The US military has confirmed that the Houthis in Yemen damaged the Greek cargo ship Tutor, which was damaged by an unmanned boat and filling with water. The message emphasized that the ship had recently been in Russia, but did not specify what kind of cargo it had taken. In addition, the US military said it destroyed three missile launchers in Yemen and intercepted a UAV launched into the Red Sea area.

Statement by ΠΕΝΕΝ:

“According to Arab media reports, the TUTOR was attacked twice by air and sea 75 nautical miles southwest of Hudaydah, Yemen. The 82,000 dwt bulk carrier (built 2022) is owned by Livenza Shipping Inc (Greece) and managed/operated by Evalend Shipping, based in Athens (Filellinonon 21) and owned by shipowner Kriton Lentoudis.

According to the latest data, the ship received serious damage in the engine room and is in uncontrollable voyage. A hole (rupture) formed at the site of the collision with the ship, resulting in water entering the engine room…

Late yesterday evening it was reported that the ship had begun to sink and that at least one sailor had died as a result of the missile attack. According to PENEN, this is the 15th vessel of Greek interests to be targeted attacks in the Red Sea. On two of them there were 3 dead and one wounded, and the second sank, and the crew abandoned it without losses.”
