Neck twist "in law"or license to kill "birds of the world"

A German city held a referendum on the destruction of some of the city's pigeons – now their necks will be twisted by a specially designated employee for this purpose.

About it tells publication BB.LV, referring to the results of the referendum and the decision taken by the authorities. The majority of residents of the city of Limburg an der Lahn, in the German federal state of Hesse, in a referendum supported the neck-twisting of some of the pigeons, of which there were too many in the populated area.

According to Spiegel, the referendum, which took place simultaneously with the European Parliament elections on June 9, decided whether to support the city council's decision to kill some of the pigeons.

According to the results, 53.45% of voters supported both the method of exterminating the birds and the decision of the Limburg authorities. More than 7,500 voters took part in the voting, which exceeds the minimum turnout threshold of 25%, after which the referendum is considered valid. Mayor Marius Hahn commented on the support of the townspeople:

“We could not predict today's result. Citizens exercised their right and decided that the birds should be destroyed.”

Although on the eve of the referendum, animal rights activists expressed confidence that city residents “will vote in favor of an ethically correct decision, against the brutal killing of pigeons by twisting their necks.”

The plan, approved by the Limburg authorities last year, envisaged that the city's pigeons would be lured into a trap with food from where they would no longer be able to escape. There, a specially appointed worker will twist their neck.
